Course Description: 

This semester long course is designed to teach the fundamentals of photography. Students will investigate camera controls such as aperture, shutter and shutter speeds, elements of composition, the history of photography and its influences, various types of photography, and post processing Photoshop techniques. Students will also have an opportunity to explore the fundamentals of developing photos within a darkroom. 

Credit:  Visual Arts / Career & Technical Education 

There is a $35.00 supply fee, plus an additional $5-10 for individual photo materials. These must be paid at the beginning of the semester. You can pay the bookkeeper, or pay online here:

Required Materials: 

  • Each student should bring a designated notebook and folder with them to class to take notes, store handouts, and stay organized. 
  • You are NOT expected to purchase new cameras for this course; we have fantastic cameras for use during class time.  
  • However, it may be helpful to try and find a camera to borrow if you wish to shoot outside of class time, as it is possible all cameras will already be checked out (for checking out a camera, see Ms. Johns). Here are some options that will work for this class:

The semester will consist of the following:  

  • Major Projects – These will be assigned to develop your photographic, artistic, and technical skills, talents, and a more in depth understanding of specific techniques, tools, and styles in the world of photography.  
     
  • Outside of Class Participation – This participation will mostly be related to the current photography project you are working on in class. Due to limited class time and subject matter, you are expected to take photos outside of class. This participation will contribute to the success of your photo projects and allow you to be better prepared to take advantage of the computer lab and darkroom at school. Not all your photography will turn out the way you want, therefore taking time to shoot outside of class will give you more to work with and receive help with during class. 
     
  • In-Class Assignments & Quizzes – These will appear periodically, mainly covering any concepts, terms, techniques, functions, etc. 
     
  • Critiques – This course will have critiques to advance your ability to view, interpret, and discuss photography. During these, you will discuss your own works in progress and finished projects. You will be expected to participate by being prepared to show and talk about your own work. Other students may offer advice or helpful suggestions. The purpose of these critiques is not to downgrade or to “tear apart” the work and the artist, but rather to help the photographer and others improve their skills. 
     
  • Work Ethic and Professionalism – You will automatically receive points on the first day for your work ethic and professionalism that contribute to your overall grade. You can only receive the full credit if you spend the entire class putting forth your effort and energy into your assignments in a respectful and professional manner. If you spend your time working on anything other than assignments for this class, sleeping, talking excessively, playing computer games or hanging out on the internet, or USING YOUR CELLPHONE for anything other than photography, points will be deducted accordingly. Note: Staying off task continually will also warrant detentions. 
      
  • Extra Credit – These opportunities will arise throughout the year and will come at the discretion of the teacher. You may submit a photo-based gallery review (1 per quarter) and/or write a research essay on a contemporary photographer (1 per quarter).

Expectations 

Attendance  Attendance is particularly important in this course as many of the projects require specialized materials that are available only in class. If you are absent, it is up to you to make any arrangements with your teacher to make up the work you missed. If you do not make this effort, any missing assignments will affect your overall grade in the class. 

Tardies  Attendance will be taken right after the bell, and class will then begin. If you walk in after class has started, you are tardy. After 5 unexcused tardies, you will receive a detention. Certain days  

Leaving Class  To leave during class for the restroom, you must check the SIGN OUT SHEET and SIGN OUT. Only two people may be gone from the classroom at a time (except for photoshoots), so you may have to wait for someone to return before you can leave.  
If you leave class to take a few photos, you must also ASK before signing out, and not be gone longer than 10 minutes at a time. This means that you are to return to class and check in with the teacher for permission to stay out longer, you may need to show proof on your camera that you are indeed taking photos for the project. If you are gone more than 10 minutes, you will receive a lunch detention. If this privilege is abused, such as leaving every day during class for long amounts of time, restrictions will be made on your ability to leave class. If your behavior outside of class is reported back to me, you will lose your ability to leave class and will need to do all your photography within the classroom or at home. 
Note: If you leave class early without permission, you will receive a lunch detention.  

Work Ethic and Employability  Please come to class on time and prepared to contribute to the culture of a working photography lab. A single class period is a very limited time to make progress on a photography project, time in this class is very valuable. In addition, as a Career and Technical Education course, standards for employability and leadership will be taught and practiced throughout the semester. You are expected to act as a professional in a professional workplace and contribute to a positive learning environment.   

Late Work Policy - All projects will be accepted without penalty if turned in before the mid-quarter and quarterly postings.  After grades are posted work will be accepted for ½ credit up until the end of the semester. 

 

Photography 1 Rules   

  • Absolutely no food or drink, including water, near the computers. If a student needs to do so, they can do so at the table at the side of the room. Also: NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE PHOTO LAB AT ALL! 
  • Students may only use the computer for Photography 1 work. Students MAY NOT use the computer for playing music, checking e-mail, or “surfing the net.”  This class involves skill training and practice, and there is a lot to cover. You simply won’t have time for other things in the class. 
  • You are responsible for your equipment. The equipment is expensive. Expensive enough that signatures will be needed and things must be learned before you can handle it. Misuse, damage, and loss of equipment will result in fines for their full value. More on this on that sheet you’ll be signing. 
  • Respect yourself, others, and property. If you are playing the fool and/or you mess with another student’s equipment, you will get detention and anything that breaks will assume to be your fault. 
  • This is a workplace, so treat it as such. You will (mostly) be treated as adults in a workplace and have the freedom to work at your own pace. However, you also have the responsibility to show up on time, turn your photos in, meet deadlines, put in extra time when you need to, and seek help when you need it. 
    Make no mistake – it is A LOT of responsibility in your hands. It is this way on purpose – to give you experience and training in responsibility. 

 

Academic Dishonesty  Plagiarism is a big issue in the world of professional photography.  Though all courses at IHS have zero tolerance for plagiarism, in this course we will be very careful to always cite and reference any text, image, or music we use from other sources.   
Also note that the point of the class is to develop your skills – and it assumes you are starting with none. So, if you turn work in that is discovered not to be your own - you are ignoring the point of the class and violating basic requirements for being an IHS will receive a ZERO. Further, an email will be sent home explaining why a zero was given. Please refer to student handbook as well for the school policy on this. Also –again on the point of developing your skill – all photos you turn in must be taken after the project has been assigned. You may not use photos you have taken previously in the class no matter how good the photo is (if it is that good a photo – go take it again!).  I need to be able to assess your growth in this class and whether you are applying the recent skill and techniques you are learning.  
Don’t worry – you will have chances to share those amazing photos at other designated times  

Students are expected to produce work that is of high quality in all assignments and all assignments need to be school appropriate-projects submitted with prohibited content (i.e. drugs, profanity, or alcohol) will be reported to administration, and will not be accepted for a grade. 

 

When Uploading & Turning In Your Work:  

  • Do Not email projects to the teacher! Turn them in to the properly designated space on Canvas.
  • Always save all of your work to your personal folder on the school server. And maybe also your google drive. And a thumb-drive. Etc.  
    DO NOT SAVE TO YOUR DESKTOP! 
     (the seating charts will be changed and the computers are periodically wiped without notice) 
  • Always rotate your photos to be viewed correctly, otherwise points will be deducted, no matter how amazing the photo is. 

A note on content: 
Naturally, it is anticipated that there will be diversity among students registered in this course in term of experience in the arts, levels of academic preparation, culture, life experiences, and current interests. Additionally, historically artists have dealt with sensitive subject matter such as wars, various religions, emotional issues, nudity, etc. As you study, these subject matters may appear. This class will address the subject matter historically, but does not advocate any particular philosophy concerning these subjects. Please address any reservations you have about the subject matter with the teacher.

In addition to opportunities within the classroom, students also have the option to join Technology Student Association (TSA), a national organization of students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). With a membership of over 233,000 middle and high school students in approximately 2,000 schools spanning 49 states, TSA is supported by educators, parents and business leaders who believe in the need for a technologically literate society. Members learn through exciting competitive events, leadership opportunities and much more. The clubs meet after school with Adviser Ms. Johns (Photography) and Mr. Tuohy (Game Design).
