Course Syllabus

Class Overview:

All units include readers workshops (RW)  and writers workshops (WW) to develop skills throughout the school year . Major units include: 

  • Notice & Note Reading Strategies
  • Young Wonders (RW)
  • Narrative  (WW)
  • Discussing Literature (RW)
  • Informational Reading (RW)
  • Hero’s Journey (RW)
  • Formal Essay (WW)

Grammar skills and vocabulary will be developed throughout each unit.

This class does not read novels together. Students are given a range of texts to choose from during RW.

Grading:

Summative (60%): This includes assessments that show your understanding of learned concepts. This includes, but is not limited to: projects, tests/quizzes, and presentations often completed later in the unit. 

Formative (40%): This includes homework and in-class assignments that show your learning process as we engage with new and recurring ideas each day. 

50% Grading Rule: Missing work will receive 50% in the gradebook Process and Culminating work will be scored according to standards to show understanding concepts. 

Grading Scale: At CMMS, all Language Arts classes do not use minus (-) grades.
