Course Description: This course addresses the State Standards for Mathematics for Grade 8 by developing students’ abilities to problem solve, reason and communicate mathematics through the Standards for Math Practice. Students’ learning in this course focuses on systems of linear equations, functions and relationships, 2D and 3D space and the Pythagorean Theorem.

Course Goals:  In this course, we aim to enhance students' problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills in mathematics, aligning with the State Standards for Grade 8. The focus will be on understanding and applying systems of linear equations, exploring functions and relationships, and analyzing 2D and 3D space. Additionally, students will deepen their grasp of the Pythagorean Theorem, all while engaging with the Standards for Mathematical Practice to develop a comprehensive and practical understanding of these key concepts.

Course Outline by Semester or Trimester:

1st Trimester: Real Numbers, Analyze and Solve Linear Equations, Use Functions to Model Relationship

2nd Trimester: Investigate Bivariate Data, Analyze and Solve Systems of Linear Equations

3rd Trimester: Congruence and Similarity, Understand and Apply the Pythagorean Theorem, Solve Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume

Assessment Criteria

Grading categories and types of work: Students will be graded based on classwork, in-class activities such as discussions, homework assignments, formative assessments, and summative assessments.

Category weights: 70% of the students' grade will be based on summative assessments, 20% will be based on formative assessments while 10% will be based on homework assignments.

Recovery Plans: Students will have recovery opportunities for grades below 85%. To qualify for a retake, students must complete missed unit homework and test corrections. During recovery opportunities, students can regain up to 85% of the original value of the assignments.

Homework: You can view homework assignments and their due dates in the Assignments section. Additionally, you can check the weekly agenda to see what is happening in our classroom.

Late Work: If you submit your assignment after the due date, your grade will be reduced by 10% for each day it is late. However, you cannot receive a grade lower than 50%. You have until the end of the unit to submit all your missing work.

                           Classroom Values and Expectations
